You bought laminate shelving, support brackets, and a clothing rod to organize your closet. The pieces are sitting in your garage. Now you’re looking at your empty closet wondering where to start and how to make sure nothing falls down once it’s loaded with clothes.
Here’s the proper installation process that creates closet systems strong enough to hold heavy loads without sagging or pulling away from walls.
Installing Shelves That Don't Sag

- Support brackets must go into studs every 24 to 32 inches maximum. Laminate shelves 10 to 12 inches deep holding folded clothes can weigh 30 to 50 pounds per section. Drywall anchors will fail under this weight. Only studs provide secure mounting.
- Level is critical for every shelf. Use your level to mark bracket positions. Install one bracket, level from it to mark the next position, then install the second bracket. Check level again before installing the shelf. Unlevel shelves look bad and items slide to one side.
- Pilot holes prevent splitting. Drill pilot holes slightly smaller than your screw diameter before driving screws into studs or brackets. This gives you control and prevents wood from splitting.
- Don’t overtighten screws into laminate shelving. Laminate is compressed wood that can crush if you overtighten. Snug is enough. Overtight strips threads and damages material.
Installing Clothing Rods Properly
Rod supports need studs too. Clothing rods hold significant weight. A rod full of hanging clothes can weigh 40 to 80 pounds. Supports must mount into studs at each end. For rods longer than 48 inches, add a center support.
Height matters for function. Standard rod height is 60 to 66 inches for shirts and pants. Full length hanging for dresses needs rods at 72 to 80 inches. Measure from the floor, not the ceiling, because ceiling heights vary.
Use quality rod hardware. Cheap plastic rod supports crack under weight. Metal supports with secure mounting screws hold up to daily use for years.
